Jo Garcia: [Laughs] I am not attracted to anyone in my industry?they are all girls! In the entertainment industry, it?s hard to be attracted to anyone that you haven?t met. When you see celebrities you treat them like everyday people because they are. And just like everyone else looks don?t keep me interested. I need to talk to someone first before I can claim that I am attracted to someone.

DLYDJ: PS3 or Xbox 360?

JG: It used to be PlayStation for years because I am a huge RPG girl and I absolutely love the Final Fantasy series. Since it was only PlayStation, I lived by my PlayStation! But with all great games that are exclusive to both consoles, I cannot choose which one is my ultimate favorite anymore. The real question should be PSN (PlayStation Network) or XBL (Xbox Live) and for that I will have to say Live is the best. There are more people in the community, their dashboard has a better interface, and I haven?t been hacked there? yet!

DLYDJ: If you were in an epic battle setting similar to Soul Calibur V ? who would your opponent be and why?

JG: I don?t think I would want to go head-to-head with any bad guy. But, if I had to, I could tell you who I would want on my team. I would have Kosmos from Xenosaga because she is just full of surprises; Rikku from Final Fantasy X because you can always use a good thief; Chun Li from Street Fighter because her lightning kick is almost unstoppable; Lara Croft just in case we run into some puzzles that need solving and Kratos from God of War to take care of all the heavy fighting.

DLYDJ: When did you lose your video game virginity?

JG: I was seven-years-old and when I was a kid, my dad was heavy into computers! He had a computer that played a game that had three colors: yellow, green and white. The backdrop was black. I remember a game that I used to play on it with what looked like a half pipe with an airplane in the center. You had to dodge obstacles that were coming towards you. It felt kind of like Luke [Skywalker] when he was trying to destroy the Death Star by going in that valley. It was the first time I fell in love with a game. Then, later on, came school, you know that game with the mouse and the cheese on the Commodore 64 (Ed. Commodore 64 Mouse Cheese) and Oregon Trail. Also, I absolutely loved Where in the World is Carmen San Diego on the Mac!

JG: It would have to be with Nathan Drake. He looks like he smells of adventure! He?s not a bad guy, but in a sort of seductive way, he is! He?s exciting and he has this passion that would make the cyber version of me very curious [laughs].

DLYDJ: What is the most extreme thing you?ve ever done while at a midnight release of a new game?

JG: The most extreme thing that I have ever done for a game release is something that I?ve already done [laughs]! I waited outside for 22-hours in the rain, so that I could buy a PlayStation 3. Even though I get to go to midnight releases often, I don?t usually have to stand in line for games anymore. We more often than not get review copies in the mail before the games hit stores so we can review them. So, if I am in a line, it is because a friend needed a wing man [laughs]. Personally, I come to the midnight releases to see what people are looking forward to so that I can cover it in my vlog.

DLYDJ: If you ruled the video gaming world, you would??

JG: If I ruled the video game world, I would make every game available as a livable adventure! Most people want to take trips to exotic places, but I want to go to places that I see in my favorite video games. I would create a theme park or something that allows you to visit such places. A world created by gamers for gamers.

DLYDJ: Last question, Jo? The best way for guys to convince their girl to start gaming would be to??

JG: I think that guys need to take the lady they?re seeing or interested in to a store and let her choose a game to play. If you find something that she is interested in and steer her towards games that will pique her interest then she may be curious to see what else is available for her to play! For example, my friend got his non-gamer girlfriend into gaming by introducing her to the Xbox Kinect and Dance Central game. He made her use the controller to select the songs just so she could get use to it. Now, she plays other games because her first experience was good and she learned about the scary Xbox controller a little at a time.

The Prison Creative Arts Project

You may have friends around campus who are involved in ?PCAP.? And seems that people who are rave about it. My sophomore year roommate took the course and now subsequently works for the on-campus organization. The experience nearly changed her entire course of study from medicine to social work. Last spring,? I attended her final project exhibition. It took place at a prison in Jackson, Michigan where she and a partner had been working for the entire semester to create? a play.. I will never forget walking in the courtyard of the jail to a small class room near the cafeteria where a group of incarcerated, middle aged men perform a play they had spent four months writing. These men had very clearly grown to admire and value my 5?2? roommate as a mentor and guide. The experience was, needless to say, incredibly formative and powerful.

PCAP is offered at UofM as both a course through the Department of English Language and Literature and by the School of Art and Design.? The course, led by professor and curator Buzz Alexander, trains students to facilitate workshops in the arts in state prisons, juvenile facilities, or Detroit high schools. Mediums include creative writing, theater,? dance, mural, music, photography, quilt making, and video. His wife, Janie Paul, teaches a corollary course through the Art school which is geared specifically toward instructing in the visual arts. Since is genesis in 1990, PCAP has facilitated hundreds of workshops and has garnered huge success in its mission.

In this process, the critical stage of reducing GO flakes into graphene requires the exposure of the GO to hydrazine. This reduction process has fundamental limitations for large scale production; in particular because of the hydrazine vapor is highly toxic.

The method developed by the Toyohashi Tech team was inspired by a recent report showing that graphene oxide behaves as a terminal electron acceptor for bacteria, where the GO is reduced by microbial action in the process of breathing or electron transport. Notably, the Toyohashi Graphene Research Group method is a hybrid approach, where chemically derived graphene oxide flakes are reduced by readily available microorganisms extracted from a river bank near the Tempaku Campus of Toyohashi University of Technology, Aichi, Japan. Raman scattering measurements showed that the GO flakes had indeed been reduced.

The approach offers a low-cost, highly efficient, and environmentally friendly method for the mass production of high quality graphene for the electronics industry.

Scientists unravel mystery of humongous squid eyeballs

Living at extreme ocean depths, the colossal squid and its cousin, the giant squid, has unusually large eyes. A group of researchers say they now know what accounts for the animals' huge peepers.?

The basketball-sized eyeballs of the colossal squid are good for more than just staring down Captain Nemo. A new study suggests that they evolved to keep a lookout for sperm whales.?

Despite being the largest known invertebrate, the colossal squid, which lives 2,000 feet below the surface of the Antarctic Ocean, has long eluded scientific observation. Until 1981, the only evidence of the giant cephalopod's existence could be found in the stomachs of what is thought to be its chief predator, the sperm whale. Since then, four complete specimens have been captured, the largest being hauled aboard by a New Zealand fishing boat in 2007.

This squid, which measured over 30 feet and weighed half a ton, was frozen, thawed and examined by?Dan-Eric Nilsson, a marine vision expert at the University of Lund in Sweden. He confirmed that the squid's eyeballs, which measured 11 inches across, were the largest of any known animal.

Indeed, they were so big that they presented a puzzle. Other squids had eyes that were much smaller in proportion to the rest of their bodies, and?no other animal, regardless of its size, had eyes that were even close to those of the colossal squid, and its slightly smaller cousin, the giant squid. The eyes of swordfish and whales, for instance, tend to top out at about 3.5 inches in diameter.?

"You can find everything up to the size of an orange, which are in large swordfish," Nilsson told BBC News's Richard Black.?"So you find every small size, then there's a huge gap, then there are these two species where the eye is three times as big ? even though squid are not the largest animals."

Bigger eyes tend to do a better job of detecting light, but in the ocean there are diminishing returns once eyes reach a certain size. Once you get to about the size of an orange, bigger eyes seem to confer no benefit.

Plus, as Nilsson points out, large eyes are metabolically expensive to maintain. "Walking flies spend about 20 percent of their electricity bill on their eyes, so to speak, just running the neurons,? he said in an interview with Wired. ?We don?t know what the costs are for giant squid, but they could cause some significant drag. They are just these massive things."

So why the huge peepers? By measuring the squid's eyes' components and gathering data on the clarity of the waters it inhabited, Nilsson's team concluded that the colossal squid is extremely farsighted; it was lousy at examining objects up close, but could see underwater about the length of a football field, or "freakishly long distances," in the words of a Duke University biologist who collaborated with Nilsson.

Just as important, the eyes' large diameter also gives the squids' an ability to detect tiny changes in contrast.?

These abilities are not, by themselves, enough to spot an incoming sperm whale. But they do help detect glowing plankton and other tiny bioluminescent?organisms that sparkle as they are jostled in the whale's wake.

The faint pinpoints of light can give the squid just enough advance warning to avoid becoming the whale's lunch. In other words, the squids' extraordinarily large eyeballs are the result of an arms race against another extraordinary long-distance detection mechanism: sonar.?

Nilsson's teams' findings appear in the March 15 issue of Current Biology.

Yahoo sues Facebook over patents

NEW YORK (AP) ? Yahoo is suing Facebook over patents, just weeks before the social-networking heavyweight is due to cash in with its initial public offering of stock.

Yahoo Inc. said in a court filing Monday that Facebook has infringed 10 of its patents covering advertising, privacy controls and social networking. Yahoo had threatened to sue Facebook last month, insisting that the social network license its patents.

Facebook vowed to defend itself vigorously against what it called "puzzling actions" by Yahoo.

"We're disappointed that Yahoo, a longtime business partner of Facebook and a company that has substantially benefited from its association with Facebook, has decided to resort to litigation," Facebook said in a statement. Yahoo ties a lot of its online services to Facebook, which has helped it attract users.

As with many patent suits, this one will likely be resolved in a settlement or licensing deal. That said, the patent claims could cast a spotlight on Facebook's vulnerabilities as the company tries to complete an IPO this spring. At the end of 2011, Facebook had just 56 U.S. patents, a relatively small number compared with other big tech companies. Yahoo owns more than 1,000 patents.

That trove of patents may come in handy for Yahoo, which has seen its revenue fall steadily over the past three years. But it could also cast the company as desperate, trying to extract money from soon-to-be-public Facebook.

Yahoo made hundreds of millions of dollars from a patent settlement that it reached with Google Inc. just before the Internet search leader went public in 2004. Facebook's IPO is expected to dwarf Google's, valuing the Menlo Park, California-based social network at as much as $100 billion.

Yahoo defended its lawsuit, saying it has invested "substantial resources in research and development" over the years leading to technology patents that other companies have licensed. Its lawsuit says that without Yahoo's innovations, Facebook and other websites would not enjoy "repeat visitors or substantial advertising revenue."

Among other claims, the lawsuit says that Yahoo's patents cover basic social networking ideas such as customizing website users' experiences to their needs and interests. And it says that Yahoo's advertising patents cover ways of generating ads that relate to individual users, increasing revenue for website operators.

Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo filed the lawsuit Monday in federal court in San Jose, California. It is asking for unspecified damages and a jury trial.

Water crunch looms without action on waste: UN report

Water problems in many parts of the world are chronic and without a crackdown on waste will worsen as demand for food rises and climate change intensifies, the UN warned on Sunday.

Issued on the eve of a six-day gathering on world water issues, the United Nations, in a massive report, said many daunting challenges lie ahead.

They include providing clean water and sanitation to the poor, feeding a world population set to rise from seven billion to nine billion by 2050 and coping with the impact of global warming.

"Pressures on freshwater are rising, from the expanding needs of agriculture, food production and energy consumption to pollution and the weaknesses of water management," UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in the report.

"Climate change is a real and growing threat. Without good planning and adaptation, hundreds of millions of people are at risk of hunger, disease, energy shortages and poverty."

The World Water Development Report is issued every three years to coincide with the World Water Forum, opening in this southern French city on Monday.

Written by experts in hydrology, economics and social issues under the aegis of UNESCO, it aims to be the world's reference manual for water.

The document, the fourth in the series, made these points:

-- Population growth and a shift to more meat-intensive diet will drive up demand for food by some 70 percent by 2050. Using current methods, this will lead to a nearly 20 percent increase in global agricultural water consumption.

Farming today accounts for around 70 percent of water use, ranging from 44 percent in rich countries to more than 90 percent in least developed economies.

-- Abstraction of aquifers has at least tripled in the past 50 years, supplying nearly half of all drinking water today. "In some hotspots, the availability of non-renewable groundwater resources has reached critical limits," says the report.

An aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing rock or soil.

The report calls for an overhaul in water management and a massive effort to curb waste. Better irrigation systems, less thirsty crops and the use of "grey," meaning used, water to flush toilets are among the options.

-- The bill for coping with climate-induced water problems will be between 13.7 billion and 19.2 billion dollars annually between 2020 and 2050. This is based on the assumption UN climate talks limit global warming to two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

"The current areas with water stress will be suffering more," said Olcay Unver, who coordinated the report, pointing as examples to the Middle East, South Asia and the southwestern United States.

-- About 2.5 billion people have no access to decent sanitation, a figure meaning that a key Millennium Development Goal for 2015 is likely to be missed. In contrast, UN estimates last week said a goal for improving access to clean water would be met.

The report places the spotlight on competition for water between cities, farmers and ecosystems, and between countries as well. An estimated 148 states have international water basins within their territory and 21 countries lie entirely within them.

Even so, there seems no major risk of water wars, Unver told journalists in Paris last week. "Countries have shown great success in cooperating in water resources than fighting over them."

Emerging as a worrying phenomenon is the acquisition of farmland in Africa by western economies, Middle Eastern states and the emerging giants China and India to provide food or biofuels.

The risk is of simply transferring a wasteful water "footprint" elsewhere, possibly at the expense of a local ecosystem.

"The amount of water required for biofuel plantation could be particularly devastating to regions such as West Africa, where water is already scarce," says the report.
