Government ends Norway oil, gas strike

(AP) ? The Norwegian government has ordered an end to a two-week strike by oil and gas workers as producers threatened a lockout which would have shut down the industry within days.

Labor Minister Hanne Bjurstroem said early Tuesday that she was forced to end the strike to avert the lockout in the interests of the country, which is dependent on its oil and gas income.

The lockout, which had been scheduled to begin at midnight Monday, would have affected more than 6,500 workers with daily losses of some 1.8 billion kroner ($300 million).

The strike, which began on June 24, failed to produce an agreement on pay and pensions, with unions also demanding more paternity leave for employees.
