Weight gain among dangers of antipsychotic drug use in children ...

By Vancouver Sun February 2, 2012

B.C. researchers have found a genetic variation in children that puts them at six times greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome when they take certain drugs for mental health problems.

Metabolic syndrome is a bundle of conditions ? such as high blood pres-sure, obesity and diabetes ? that can contribute to cardiovascular disease.

In other newly published B.C. research, it is shown that a simple waist-circumference measurement test is a good indicator of metabolic syndrome in kids on the drugs, commonly known as second-generation antipsychotics. In that study, published in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, 19 per cent of kids on such drugs at BC Children?s Hospital had metabolic syndrome.

?Patients and their parents are pretty distressed about the weight gain and other side-effects of second-generation antipsychotic drugs,? said Dr. Dina Panagiotopoulos, an endocrinologist who sees kids referred to her for side-effect management.

?They often say they wished they knew about the side-effects before so they could do more about curbing carbohydrate cravings, about not drinking sugary drinks, and limiting time in front of [computer and television] screens,? said Panagiotopoulos, a co-author on both studies.

Both showed the link between risk factors for cardiovascular disease and the medications, proving the importance of parents and children being warned about diet and exercise when doctors prescribe the drugs.

Prescriptions of such medications have increased by up to 10 times in the last decade because of a perception that they are safer than older drugs.

?You can be a lot more successful in avoiding these problems if you tackle it pre-emptively ? and not after you?ve already gained 50 pounds,? said Panagiotopoulos, who conducted the research through the Child and Family Research Institute.

Second-generation antipsychotics like Seroquel and Risperdal are being used by about 5,500 children in B.C. for such problems as aggression, psycho-sis, mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar disease, autism spectrum disorders, substance abuse, schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Panagiotopoulos said she has some five-and six-year-old patients who were prescribed such drugs by psychiatrists when they were aged two or three.

The drugs may be good at control-ling mental illness symptoms but since they raise the risk for developing heart disease, doctors must be warned to monitor patients closely.

The study on the genetic variation was published in a medical journal called Translational Psychiatry. It included 117 kids on the drugs and 217 who were not, between 2008 and 2010. While 19 per cent of kids on the drugs had metabolic syndrome, only 0.8 per cent of kids not taking such medications had it.

According to the genetic study, DNA analysis showed that eight per cent of kids had the variation on the MTHFR gene, whether they were on the drugs or not. But those who used the medications were six times more likely to have metabolic syndrome, especially high blood pressure and elevated blood-sugar levels, which can lead to diabetes.

The data highlight the dangers of second-generation antipsychotic medications, Panagiotopoulos said.

News About Car: Auto Union Type D Silver Arrow returns to Audi

ONEIGHTURBO

Built more than 70 years ago, carried off 67 years ago to the former USSR, lost without trace, forgotten ? and now back with Audi: the two Auto Union Type D cars dating from 1938 (in the background) and 1939.

One of the most beautiful racing cars in the history of motor sport: the Auto Union Type D twin-supercharger racing car dating from 1939 is now back at AUDI AG.

?This is one of the most emotional moments in our heritage work for AUDI AG ? we have come full circle,? says Thomas Frank, Head of Audi Tradition. A few weeks ago, the car manufacturer was able to repurchase an extremely rare Auto Union Silver Arrow racing car ? consisting largely of original parts. It is the Auto Union twin-supercharger Type D dating from 1939, and is one of the two legendary ?Karassik cars?. AUDI AG now owns three of the five Auto Union racing cars that can claim to be original.

The Silver Arrow legend was born in the 1930s. In 1934, Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz appeared on the international motor racing scene with German racing cars of totally new design, with a silver finish and futuristic appearance, and were immediately successful. Whereas Mercedes-Benz relied on conventional front-engined cars, Auto Union placed the engine behind the driver ? the layout that is still a standard feature of today?s Formula One cars. The two manufacturers dominated racing on Europe?s Grand Prix circuits without serious opposition until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.

The most striking detail of the Auto Union Type D in the version dating from 1939 is the air scoop at the back, which was reshaped to make room for the second supercharger beneath. This additional device boosted power output from 420 to 485 horsepower.

The 16-cylinder and 12-cylinder racing cars from Zwickau and Stuttgart captured one title after another, almost as if no other cars were competing. Drivers such as Bernd Rosemeyer, Tazio Nuvolari and Hans Stuck (Auto Union), Rudolf Caracciola, Manfred von Brauchitsch and Hermann Lang (Mercedes-Benz) are still acknowledged as heroes by modern motor sport enthusiasts: they often reached speeds of more than 300 km/h in races devoid of any serious safety precautions. On the long straights of the Avus circuit in Berlin in 1937, Rosemeyer?s car was timed at 380 km/h.

The Second World War put an abrupt end to what had become known as the supercharger era. Mercedes-Benz was able to rescue almost all its Silver Arrow cars after Germany?s total collapse, but fate was less kind to Auto Union. Zwickau was occupied by the Soviet Army, Auto Union was liquidated and the factories shut down. The Russian occupying forces found the Silver Arrows where they had been stored: in a mine building above ground. The cars were carried off to the Soviet Union as part of Germany?s reparation payments, and all trace of them was soon lost in that vast country.

The vehicles best able to pay tribute to Auto Union AG?s great motor sport heritage were thus regarded as irrecoverably lost by the new Auto Union GmbH (today?s AUDI AG) when it was established in Ingolstadt in 1949. The Cold War had already begun and the Iron Curtain was firmly in place. Only one Auto Union Type C remained accessible; it had been presented to the Deutsches Museum in Munich before the war, but was later damaged in a bomb attack there.

In 1974, Professor Robert met Eberan of Eberhorst (right) and former Grand Prix driver HP Mueller (left) at the Grand Prix of France, where a Union Type D racing car was on display. Mueller had won with this Silver Arrow 1939 French Grand Prix.

At the end of the 1970, the first rumors were heard to the effect that one of the long lost Auto Union racing cars had been located somewhere in the vast region of the former Soviet Union. Paul Karassik, an American collector of high-class classic vehicles, came to Europe with his wife Barbara, whose family came from Germany, and began to search for the car. As a small boy he had been a spectator in Belgrade at the last Grand Prix held before the Second World War ? an unforgettable experience. Later, after emigrating to the USA and becoming a wealthy man, it proved to be useful to him in his search that he came from a White Russian family, had grown up in Serbia and spoke fluent Russian. It took more than ten years and numerous visits to the USSR before he tracked down the remains of two dismantled Auto Union cars in Russia and the Ukraine and, with great negotiating skill, was able to buy them.

This was followed by several hair-raising journeys, often at the wheel of a delivery van, before he was able to bring the parts out through the Iron Curtain to Western Europe. The engines, chassis, axles and gearboxes were then flown to Florida in the USA. In the autumn of 1990, Paul Karassik made initial contact with experts, including in May 1991 the AUDI AG Tradition department, which acted as advisors for the planned restoration. The Karassiks entrusted the rebuilding of their racing cars to the English company Crosthwaite & Gardiner, which already possessed the extensive know-how needed for the restoration of historic racing cars.

After detailed examination of the racing cars? components, it was decided to rebuild a Type D single-supercharger racing car to 1938 specification, and a Type D racing car in the 1939 version with twin supercharger. In both cases a complete replica body had to be constructed, since no parts of the original bodies had survived. Rod Jolley Coachbuilding built the new bodies in England. In August 1993 the first of the two racing cars, the one rebuilt to 1938 specification, was completed. A year later the twin-supercharger 1939 car was also ?ready for roll-out?. With support from Audi, both cars appeared on the starting line for the first time since 1939: at the Eifel Classic at the Nurburgring on October 1, 1994.

485 hp from the engine meant a top speed of 330 km/h. The twin-supercharger Auto Union Type D won the French and Yugoslavian Grand Prix races in 1939.

In recognition of its support during the rebuilding project, Audi was able to exhibit the 1938 car in the years that followed; it was purchased by AUDI AG in July 1998. The 1939 twin-compressor car returned to Florida. In the spring of 2000, Paul Karassik sold the second car to a private collector: in 1999 he had hoped to see this Auto Union run again in Belgrade, 60 years after the last Grand Prix held there, but the Balkan War put an end to this dream.

Purchase of the Type D twin-supercharger car means that AUDI AG now owns all three Auto Union racing cars recovered from what was formerly the USSR. Thomas Frank, Head of Audi Tradition is delighted: ?20 years ago we would never have dreamed that such a thing would be possible!? As well as the two ?Karassik cars?, the collection includes the famous hill-climb car driven by Hans Stuck, the Auto Union Type C/D. This was on show at the Car Museum in Riga, Latvia, until just after the demise of the Soviet Union, and is today one of the outstanding exhibits at the Audi museum mobile in Ingolstadt. This is also where Audi plans to display the Auto Union Type D on a long-term basis. But first of all, the new acquisition is to make a notable guest appearance at the Goodwood Revival in England, from September 14 to 16. After 67 years, the latest home-comer from the former Soviet Union will form part of an impressive ensemble together with the Auto Union Type D racing cars first seen in 1994.

This is one of the most emotional moments in our heritage work for AUDI AG ? we have come full circle,? says Thomas Frank, Head of Audi Tradition

Make It Big With Your Affiliate Marketing Endeavors! | Successful ...

Ah, affiliate marketing. There are just so many ways to define it, as it doesn?t mean the same thing to everybody. There are also so many ways that somebody can market themselves or even other people. With so many ways to do things, you are probably wondering where you can begin. Try beginning with the tips noted here.

Offer customers to your website exclusive services if they make a purchase from the advertisers in your affiliate program. Do not restrict vital data this way, but make sure which customers who do buy get something of definite value out of your websites bonus content. This will encourage both purchases from your affiliate and repeat visits to your website.

Try to find the latest items with the newest technology to try out and review on your website, and then link to them and all the accessories you recommend through your affiliate links. Keep up with tech newsletters and podcasts so you know which quality products you should be promoting next.

If you want to be successful in affiliate marketing, you need to build a content rich affiliate website. It is good practice to have content which is in line with the merchant?s product offering. This ensures that your visitors are interested in the products your merchant sells; which helps you to send more customers to your merchant.

Put affiliate links in your subscription emails. Since customers sign up for subscriptions, they already know they will be receiving information from your site. Make your affiliate happier by including several links in the email, asking customers not to forget to visit their quality site as well as yours.

One problem with niche marketing is it is sometimes hard to find niches that work for you. There are programs that look for these niches for you and help you find out if they will work for you or not. Try out some of these programs and see if they can help you find the right profitable niches.

The best way to get your content retweeted is to provide something people want to read. A boring affiliate product review won?t cut it, so think up innovative ways to get people talking. The more buzz there is surrounding your article, the more likely it is to be shared around the internet.

When you design your site for your affiliate advertising venture, it is vitally important that you understand that you will not get paid unless your visitors click on the links that you post on your page. Many times, informational pages will not get you very many clicks, as most people visiting your site are not looking for a product.

Keep track of special offers made by the advertisers in your affiliate marketing program. If advertisers on your website are making a limited-time offer on the products you are advertising for them you should know about it. Consider posting special content to emphasize such deals so that you get your piece of the action.

If you are looking for something to promote, pick a product or service that you are interested in. This will make promoting the product or service more enjoyable. If you care nothing about what you are promoting, it will show through in your website, and your audience will not click on any affiliate links that you post.

As you may now be aware, affiliate marketing is an efficient and cost effective method for marketing your business to new customer pools that you may not otherwise, be exposed to. By applying the tips and advice from this article, you will help increase the exposure of your business and may very well begin your journey to success.

5 Ways To Incorporate Your Kids And Still Get Things Done ...

Posted on 12. Aug, 2012 by Danielle Buffardi in Family

It?s easy to feel like we need to find something for our kids to do while we attempt to accomplish a task, an errand, or even a load of laundry.

The truth is, it?s rather easy to incorporate our kids into these activities ? we simply need to include them rather than exclude them. They love being a part of our ?grown up? activities, so their willingness to work with you rather than against you will also be in your favor.

Here are five ways to do just that.

1. Grocery Shopping

This errand can feel like a mountain to climb when you have to have at it while toting your children with you.

But it?doesn?t?have to be.

Why not make out small lists for them according to the aisles. For instance, if your littler children know their colors, have them pick out a box with a red circle on it, or find a bag with a yellow square.

They?ll feel super special and you?ll be able to have them in eye shot while you tend to your grocery list.

2. House Work

It may seem like no mother can keep a clean house while kids are constantly tearing it up, but you can.

And it will be so much easier to have the kids help rather than whine about having to pick up their messes.

If your kids are not at the age where you trust them with a bottle of Windex, then buy a cheap spray bottle and fill it with water and ask them to help you ?clean? the kitchen table, or the bathroom sink, even the shower.

Not only will they be near for you to keep them safe, but they?ll feel like a big kid as well.

3. Cooking

Yeah, I know. You?re thinking ?you?re crazy?. No, I?m not.

Your kiddies can help you out in the kitchen very easily and they?ll adore it too.

Think mess-free foods like dried beans and Cheerios? give your children a handful or so along with a plastic measuring cup or small bowl and tell them to ?measure out? ten beans.

Not only will it divert their attention for a few minutes each time you give them a new direction, but they?ll be learning how to count, measure, and clean up after themselves ? all while leaving you tending to dinner with your kids in eye shot.

Win-win for mom, kids, and dinner.

4. Yard Work

This can get messy, so be sure everyone?s in play clothes.

If you?re weeding, have your kids weed next to you.

Or give them a bucket with soil and have them ?plant? the weeds you pull out.

Your local superstores also sell kid-sized gardening tools, wagons, and wheelbarrows, so grab a set or two and have the kids help you rake the yard and till the garden.

5. Exercising

Forget the gym, head outside with the kids so everyone can get their fitness on.

If you?re a runner, slow it down a bit while your children ride their bikes alongside of you.

Need to squeeze in some strength training? No problem, while you do some curls with the weights your kids can do the same with their stuffed animals or blocks.

Even Yoga is easy to incorporate into the mix. Your children can try their hand at whatever pose you want to get into simply by asking them to mimic what you?re doing with your body.

?

  • The key to melding your chores with your kids is to make it a fun family event. Work with your kids instead of against them to get what you need to get done.

Scientist discovers plate tectonics on Mars

ScienceDaily (Aug. 9, 2012) ? For years, many scientists had thought that plate tectonics existed nowhere in our solar system but on Earth. Now, a UCLA scientist has discovered that the geological phenomenon, which involves the movement of huge crustal plates beneath a planet's surface, also exists on Mars.

"Mars is at a primitive stage of plate tectonics. It gives us a glimpse of how the early Earth may have looked and may help us understand how plate tectonics began on Earth," said An Yin, a UCLA professor of Earth and space sciences and the sole author of the new research.

Yin made the discovery during his analysis of satellite images from a NASA spacecraft known as THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) and from the HIRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. He analyzed about 100 satellite images -- approximately a dozen were revealing of plate tectonics.

Yin has conducted geologic research in the Himalayas and Tibet, where two of Earth's seven major plates divide.

"When I studied the satellite images from Mars, many of the features looked very much like fault systems I have seen in the Himalayas and Tibet, and in California as well, including the geomorphology," said Yin, a planetary geologist.

For example, he saw a very smooth, flat side of a canyon wall, which can be generated only by a fault, and a steep cliff, comparable to cliffs in California's Death Valley, which also are generated by a fault. Mars has a linear volcanic zone, which Yin said is a typical product of plate tectonics.

"You don't see these features anywhere else on other planets in our solar system, other than Earth and Mars," said Yin, whose research is featured as the cover story in the August issue of the journal Lithosphere.

The surface of Mars contains the longest and deepest system of canyons in our solar system, known as Valles Marineris (Latin for Mariner Valleys and named for the Mariner 9 Mars orbiter of 1971-72, which discovered it). It is nearly 2,500 miles long -- about nine times longer than Earth's Grand Canyon. Scientists have wondered for four decades how it formed. Was it a big crack in Mars' shell that opened up?

"In the beginning, I did not expect plate tectonics, but the more I studied it, the more I realized Mars is so different from what other scientists anticipated," Yin said. "I saw that the idea that it is just a big crack that opened up is incorrect. It is really a plate boundary, with horizontal motion. That is kind of shocking, but the evidence is quite clear.

"The shell is broken and is moving horizontally over a long distance. It is very similar to the Earth's Dead Sea fault system, which has also opened up and is moving horizontally."

The two plates divided by Mars' Valles Marineris have moved approximately 93 miles horizontally relative to each other, Yin said. California's San Andreas Fault, which is over the intersection of two plates, has moved about twice as much -- but Earth is about twice the size of Mars, so Yin said they are comparable.

Yin, whose research is partly funded by the National Science Foundation, calls the two plates on Mars the Valles Marineris North and the Valles Marineris South.

"Earth has a very broken 'egg shell,' so its surface has many plates; Mars' is slightly broken and may be on the way to becoming very broken, except its pace is very slow due to its small size and, thus, less thermal energy to drive it," Yin said. "This may be the reason Mars has fewer plates than on Earth."

Mars has landslides, and Yin said a fault is shifting the landslides, moving them from their source.

Does Yin think there are Mars-quakes?

"I think so," he said. "I think the fault is probably still active, but not every day. It wakes up every once in a while, over a very long duration -- perhaps every million years or more."

Yin is very confident in his findings, but mysteries remain, he said, including how far beneath the surface the plates are located.

"I don't quite understand why the plates are moving with such a large magnitude or what the rate of movement is; maybe Mars has a different form of plate tectonics," Yin said. "The rate is much slower than on Earth."

Earth has a broken shell with seven major plates; pieces of the shell move, and one plate may move over another. Yin is doubtful that Mars has more than two plates.

"We have been able to identify only the two plates," he said. "For the other areas on Mars, I think the chances are very, very small. I don't see any other major crack."

Did the movement of Valles Marineris North and Valles Marineris South create the enormous canyons on Mars? What led to the creation of plate tectonics on Earth?

Yin, who will continue to study plate tectonics on Mars, will answer those questions in a follow-up paper that he also plans to publish in the journal Lithosphere.

Nicola Adams guaranteed boxing gold or silver

Britain's Nicola Adams is certain to get either the first gold or silver women's Olympic boxing gold medal ever to be awarded after beating five-time world champion M.C. Mary Kom in their flyweight semi-final on Wednesday.

The Leeds 29 year-old, who scored an 11-6 victory over "Magnificent Mary", is hoping home support at the ExCel Arena will see her take gold.

"I have been training since I was 12 years old and to think I am nearly there now makes me so happy," said Adams.

"I am going to do everything exactly the same as normal, but hopefully the crowd will give me a boost and I can get that gold."

In a rematch of May's world championship quarter-final bout in Qinhuangdao, China, Adams counter-punched impressively and was too strong for Kom, who won the last of her five world golds in 2010.

Adams will face China's Ren Cancan in Thursday's final, which will be a repeat of May's world championships gold-medal bout which the Briton lost.

Their match will be the first to take place on finals night of the inaugural Olympic women's boxing tournament.

Kom is India's only boxing medal success of the London Games after Vijender Singh failed in his bid to claim a second straight bronze on Monday when he lost his middleweight quarter-final.

In the other semi-final, Ren looked comfortable in her 10-8 win over America's Marlen Esparza, using her longer reach to score with her jab.

Roasted tomatoes

It's prime time for tomatoes this summer, and roasting them in olive oil and herbs will intensify their delicious, juicy flavor.?

By Christina Masters,?The Rowdy Chowgirl / August 9, 2012

Sprinkle basil, oregano, and other seasonings on a batch of fresh tomatoes and roast them in the oven for a juicy, summer side dish.

Do you have a case of mid-summer tomato lust?? Symptoms include: grabbing every bumpy, multicolored heirloom tomato you can get your hands on at the farmer?s market, engaging in long, earnest debates about the best methods of growing tomatoes in the garden (I am of the give-them-a-trellis-then-let-them-ramble school of thought), making entire meals out of sliced tomatoes, and those in the grip of a really serious case can be found burying their face in their tomato vines at dusk and breathing deep lung-fulls of that incomparable scent.? Certain people may have even, upon occasion, rubbed tomato leaves on their wrists like perfume.

It?s a brief madness ? just a summer romance, passing harmlessly away by fall.

I?ve been slow roasting tomatoes in olive oil.? Cooked this way, their flavor is deepened and intensified. Swimming in a luxurious bath of olive oil, the deeply red tomatoes bring you nearly all the way to a finished pasta dish.

However, they are equally good simply layered on a big slice of crusty sourdough bread and topped with a few shavings of sharp white cheese.? Breathe in the garlicky perfume before taking your first bite. Then lean over so your plate can catch the inevitable drips of olive oil instead of your lap. Lick your fingers with abandon.

Tomatoes can be messy. But they are worth it.

Roasted Tomatoes
(adapted from Bon Appetit)

1/2 cup olive oil
1-1/2 pounds heirloom tomatoes, any combination
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2? teaspoon dried oregano
1/2?teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons Italian parsley, chopped fine

Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Cut tomatoes in half and remove pulp. Pour half of the olive oil into a 12x9x2-inch baking dish. Place tomatoes in single layer in baking dish, cut side up. Drizzle with remaining oil, then sprinkle with herbs, sugar and salt. Bake for one hour, then turn tomatoes over with tongs.? Bake for another hour and turn again. Continue baking until soft ? approximately 15-30 more minutes.

Place a single layer of tomatoes in a glass bowl, sprinkle with half the garlic and parsley, then repeat with second layer. Cover with the reserved oil from baking dish.

At this point, either marinate tomatoes for a few hours at room temperature before serving, or cover and refrigerate for up to a week.

Gunmen kill 16 Egypt border guards, enter Israel

Gunmen killed 16 guards in Egypt near the border with Israel before stealing two armoured vehicles and crossing into the Jewish state where one vehicle was destroyed by a helicopter.

An Egyptian medical official said gunmen in Bedouin attire drove up in two vehicles and opened fire on a checkpoint near the Karm Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom in Hebrew) border crossing and opened fire.

The health ministry said 16 soldiers and border guards were killed, while a security official said another seven were wounded.

The official MENA news agency said the gunmen were "jihadists" from inside the Islamist Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

State television and MENA reported that Egypt was closing its Rafah frontier crossing with the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip "until further notice".

Rafah is the only crossing between Gaza and the outside world that is not under Israeli control.

Speaking after an emergency meeting with military officials, the interior minister and the intelligence chief, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi vowed to retake control of the Sinai after the attack.

"The (security) forces will take full control of these regions," Morsi said in a television address.

He had given "clear instructions" that Egypt must take "full control of the Sinai", after the security situation deteriorated markedly following the ouster of longtime strongman Hosni Mubarak early last year.

Morsi, who only took the oath of office on June 30 to become the country's first freely elected leader and its first head of state since Mubarak's overthrow, said those who committed the "cowardly" attack and those who worked with them would pay it dearly.

"Those responsible for this crime will be hunted down and arrested," he said.

"Everybody will see that the Egyptian military and police forces can get these criminals wherever they are," he said. "These criminals, these attackers do not belong among us."

In Israel, military spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich told reporters gunmen hijacked two vehicles from an Egyptian outpost where they killed between 10 and 15 border guards before crossing the frontier.

One of the vehicles exploded by itself and the other was destroyed from the air, she said. Overnight Sunday the Israeli military was searching for any remaining gunmen.

She did not know how many had been on board the vehicles and if any had survived.

Israeli public radio said the vehicle had been targeted by a helicopter and that three "terrorists" on board had been killed.

Leibovich confirmed that the incident had taken place in the Kerem Shalom area.

"A few of the people who manned the vehicles started running away. We targeted them," she said.

Residents of the nearby Israeli communities were ordered to stay inside their homes until further notice, she added.

No Israeli civilians or soldiers were wounded in the incident.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed "the determined action of the military" and domestic intelligence agency Shin Bet "for ensuring the failure of a large attack on Israeli civilians".

Defence Minister Ehud Barak said: "The way these attackers acted again shows the need for the Egyptian authorities to act firmly to re-establish security and fight terrorism in the Sinai."

Leibovich said it was too early to determine the gunmen's affiliation or what they were trying to do, but "one of the assumptions is they were trying to kidnap Israeli soldiers".

MENA however identified the gunmen as "jihadists" from the Islamist-run Gaza Strip.

"Jihadist elements infiltrated from Gaza through tunnels in collaboration with jihadist elements in the Al-Mahdiya and Gabal Halal areas" inside Egypt, the agency said.

They "attacked a border post while the soldiers and officers were taking iftar," the meal that breaks the Ramadan fast, it added, quoting an unidentified official.

Earlier Sunday, before MENA's report, Hamas in Gaza had dismissed the idea that militants from the Palestinian territory may have been involved.

"The border between Egypt and Gaza is protected. We closed the tunnels (used for smuggling) to prevent anyone from escaping (into Gaza) and we have put our forces on alert," an interior ministry spokesman said.

"We reject any idea that Gaza was involved in this incident and we send our condolences over the killing of Egyptian soldiers."

A Hamas statement said: "We condemn this ugly crime in which Egyptian soldiers were killed, and send our condolences to the families of the victims, and to the Egyptian leadership and the Egyptian people."

Witnesses confirmed to AFP that police had closed all tunnels and sent reinforcements to the border.

Sinai-based Islamist militants are believed to have been responsible for several rocket attacks against Israel.

Israel accused them of having carried out a cross-border ambush last year that killed nine Israelis, and they have also been blamed for regular bombings of a pipeline that exports gas to Israel and Jordan.

The Sinai is home to Egypt's Red Sea resorts, a source of lucrative tourist income, and is also where the country's Bedouin, long marginalised under the regime of fallen strongman Mubarak, are based.

To stop any attacks and illegal cross-border activities Israel has sped up construction of a wall fitted with an electronic alert system along its 240-kilometre (150-mile) border with Egypt.

The Inner Hoe Theory: Connecting Emotions & Sex Pt.1 ? Goddess ...

I remember how lonely bed time was for the first few weeks after I first broke up with my first love (Remember Mr. Cohabitation?) I was nervous and the empty pit in my stomach at night time kept me from sleeping properly. I didn?t miss him or long for his company but I was nervous about living for myself, on my own. Our sex life had become non-existent and laid buried six feet deep in a bottomless pit (huh?).

Sexually he was quite conservative with me and I knew deep inside and from stepping out of the relationship (not an angel) towards the bitter end that I wanted to explore. I wanted to experience what my other girlfriends had- variety options and excitement- at least I thought I did.

I?ve never been comfortable with choosing a promiscuous lifestyle. I?ve always believed that my goods were not for mass distribution, plus I had bible passages hammered to my spinal cord, so I danced on the borderline of wanting to be sexually liberated and ?chose? for years. ?In other words I had no idea what I wanted.

I must admit most of my relationships have had a sexual edge that far outweighed any other component. I simply did not know how to make the transition to connect emotionally with a lover. Could one even make the transition when sex was one of the distracting surface elements of a relationship?

Overtime while I scratched my head I began to become more accepting of my sexuality. I love sex, I love sharing with a lover and I love trying new things. I also accepted that I have deep emotions that are enhanced with sex and I deserve to be loved and cherished in and out of the bedroom.

I posed a new challenge to myself. I would accept my unquenchable thirst without compromising my value and self-respect. I promised myself I would put my effort and love into connecting with partners who were equally yoked instead of looking for an archetype that I did not conjure in my own universe.

I believe everyone has an inner hoe, and I use that term lightly. And I?m not judging or forcing my little theory on anybody but I simply believe that we all have the deep need to be sexually liberated and cherished at the same time.

For most of us our sexual energy that lies deep at the base of our spine is scary. It?s powerful because of the mind numbing sensation we get when we reach the epitome of pleasure- it?s a powerful and addictive feeling.

That energy can hook and numb us or it can take you to new heights. I know that some religions have decrees to help us ignore or keep this energy dormant. To me this is unfair and not necessary to live a life of quality and service.

I respect everyone?s beliefs whether they are abstinent, a call girl or smack dab in the middle but I?ve noticed that the way we have been taught to view sex in western society for the most part is more dysfunctional than it?s ever been. The more you ignore something the stronger it becomes until you?ve accepted or embraced it. A hoe generally craves attention so they put out without remorse or reason generally using sex to numb pain. You may not be promiscuous now or ever but do feel like you numb parts of your sexuality or being to appease others?

In this new series we?ll explore how to connect emotions and sex. I?ll also take you on my journey from being sexually dormant to being equally yoked with my sexuality and emotions.

Jasmine Tea ? A unique green Tea ? Food and Drinks

Jasmine tea is a tea blend made up of green tea whose bases are leaves and jasmine flowers. These flowers give this blend its origin distinct aroma and taste.

They should also be kept away from direct sunlight, which can? Over time, the scent of jasmine will be absorbed by the green tea.

The drink is prepared by initially warming up the tea pot with freshly boiled water. The tea leaves are then placed inside and boiled water is poured after. The mixture is then set aside for 3 minutes for the juice to be drawn out of the leaves. The leaves can be re-used up to 4 times within the day. Make sure you don?t over cook the tea.

Otherwise, it may lose its flavor and aroma.

Among organic green tea offshoots, jasmine tea is undoubtedly the most popular. Well-loved by the Chinese for its fragrance and lively taste, the clamor for it has spread to other nations where tea enthusiasts abound. Japan, North America, as well as a number of countries in Europe are among the top consumers of this product.

Interest in jasmine tea has recently been given a boost these days due to the scientific findings that jasmine has a high potency in its chemopreventive qualities.

That basically translates to it being a possible anti-cancer substance. And since jasmine can be easily grown, it would be relatively easy to amass a big volume of it.

Other therapeutic and medicinal properties of jasmine are related to the autonomic nerve activity. Their scents are believed to heighten the senses and thus are good in promoting work efficiency and prolonging productivity hours. As such, entrepreneurial individuals are constantly trying to find the right mix between this flower, green tea, and a few more additives to come up with refreshing and tasty bottled beverages.

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton pressed the leaders of Kenya on the importance of fair and free elections on Saturday and encouraged the African nation to be a "model for the entire world."

Clinton urged them to avoid a repeat of the 2007 presidential election when national voting is held next year. The 2007 vote resulted in widespread violence.

After a meeting with the chief justice of Kenya's Supreme Court, Clinton said the U.S. has pledged to assist the people and government of Kenya to ensure "the upcoming elections are free, fair, and transparent."

"We urge that the nation come together and prepare for elections that will be a real model for the entire world," Clinton said.

She will also meet later with members of Somalia's transitional government and regional leaders as they prepare to hold elections in 2013.

Clinton arrived in Kenya from Uganda on Saturday and is on the fourth leg of an 11-day tour of Africa. The trip began in Senegal and will take her next to Malawi and South Africa.

Mysterious black hole type perplexes, bewilders

Billions of times the mass of our own sun, so-called massive black holes present a baffling mystery with clues hidden at the very dawn of existence.

By Charles Q. Choi,?SPACE.com / August 3, 2012

Simulation of the formation of a galaxy similar to our Milky Way. Massive black holes lurk in the centers of many of the building blocks that merge to assemble the galaxy, and a black hole also inhabits the final galaxy. Still from video release.

Black holes have long been cosmic mysteries, even as research in the past decade has shed some light on the largest of these dark objects and how matter pours into them.

Scientists say the many remaining puzzles include how the largest black holes were born at the dawn of the universe and how black holes may help shape the fate of galaxies.

"The whole field of 'massive black holes in galaxies' really developed in its own right in the last 12 years, and now it's one of the hottest in astronomy," Marta Volonteri, an astrophysicist at the Institute of Astrophysics in Paris, told SPACE.com. Volonteri is the author of a study on the evolution of the largest?black holes?appearing in the Aug. 3 issue of the journal Science.

Black holes have gravitational pulls so powerful, nothing can escape, not even light. Astronomers began mulling over the possibility of black holes in 1783, and scientists used Einstein's theory of general relativity to predict black holes in 1916.

Astronomers know of two "flavors" of black holes: "stellar-mass," which are up to a few dozen times the mass of Earth's sun, and "massive," which can be billions of times the sun's mass ? nearly the mass of all the stars in the entire Milky Way galaxy. Stellar-mass black holes are known to be the remains of dead stars, but it remains a mystery how the far-more-massive black holes formed. [Photos: Black Holes of the Universe]

The first big black holes

One of the most popular theories about the formation of massive black holes links them with the first generation of stars. However, recent simulations suggest these stars were no more than a few dozen times the sun's mass, Volonteri said ? too small to easily achieve the mass of the largest black holes.

One alternative scenario proposes that massive black holes originated from stars up to 1 million times the sun's mass born from gas that rapidly accumulated over less than about 2 million years. Another model suggests the kernels of massive black holes were born from dense clusters of stars in the centers of galaxies that merged to form stars up to a few thousand times the sun's mass, which in turn collapsed to create black holes.

Curiously, astronomers recently discovered that billion-solar-mass black holes existed when the cosmos was less than a billion years old. Scientists are at a loss to satisfyingly explain how such massive black holes could have formed so early in the universe's history.

After a certain point known as the Eddington limit, the energy released by matter rushing toward a black hole should halt the flow feeding that black hole, restricting how large it can grow. Although it is possible that billion-solar-mass black holes could have formed in less than a billion years after the Big Bang, "all odds must be favorable to the black hole, so only lucky black holes can make it," Volonteri said.

Scientists are now exploring whether or not black holes can overcome the Eddington limit and grow at so-called super-Eddington rates. "That would make black hole growth easier," Volonteri said.

Black holes and their galaxies

It remains a hotly debated question whether these massive black holes dominate how their galaxies grow or vice versa. Perhaps the energy these black holes release alters the overall evolution of galactic structures, or perhaps galaxies control how much gas falls into these black holes and thus regulate how large they grow. Another possibility is that massive black holes and their galaxies develop symbiotically.

The Dow Now: All 30 Components Up In Intraday Trading | Stocks ...

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL It was good news for President Obama and the markets today, with both cheering the positive jobs report released earlier. Stocks rallied as nonfarm payrolls beat expectations in rising by 163,000 in July.
?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) is trading up 246.24 points (1.91%) at 13,125.12 as of 12:11 p.m. EDT, putting it on its way to snap a four-day losing streak. That?s a 7.33% rise on the year to date and a 10.33% increase from the index?s value a year ago.
?
All 30 Dow components are up in intraday trading. Leading the surge is Kraft Foods (KFT), up 3.98% (+1.55) at $40.49. The company reported second-quarter profit of $0.68 a share on Thursday, which beat analyst estimates by $0.02. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) is another high-flyer, up more than 4%. The PC maker will have to gain a lot more to make up for lost ground though ? it is still the Dow?s greatest decliner of the year, having fallen 29% thus far.
?
Underwhelming in the wake of the broad rally are McDonald?s (MCD) and Verizon (VZ). The fast food company is up a tiny 0.33%, while Verizon has also increased by 0.47%. A new Forbes report finds that the telecommunications company has spent some $1.8 million in political donations this year, with 58% going to Republicans and 42% to Democrats.
?
The outlook for the rest of 2012 continues to be rocky, despite today?s good news.
?
?We continue to expect growth to slow in the second half of the year as the uncertainty shock from the fiscal cliff weighs on corporate investment,? Michelle Meyer, senior US economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, told the Wall Street Journal.? ?This should ultimately trigger additional Fed easing, in our view. That said, today?s report may have bought the Fed some time.?

The Need for Travel Insurance India Plan for Students ?

Make sure that the personal liability in the travel insurance India policy is adequate. It?s good to check on the policy?s cover for accidental death, repatriation of remains and permanent disability. It?s not nice to think about, but nonetheless it?s an important point to consider while buying student medical insurance or?student travel insurance?plans.

If you?re about to take the great leap into the unknown world and have decided to study overseas for a time, one arrangement that shouldn?t be overlooked is your travel insurance India plan especially meant for students. Accidents do happen, and it?s always better to be prepared, so that if something does go wrong, you come through it a bit easier.

The most important items to be covered under travel insurance India plans are medical expenses, dental emergencies, return flights home and personal liability. Other items that are also important are cover for your equipment (because if your laptop isn?t covered it might be hard to study without one should it get stolen) and the cost to replace travel documents.

Student?s travel insurance can provide you with a healthy dose of confidence as you go about your travels. You won?t worry about sudden changes that could ruin your trip when you have insurance coverage that will take care of any unexpected emergencies. You could even consider purchasing student?s travel insurance as an investment, for if you run into problems, accidents, or illnesses on your trip, the insurance will save you money that you otherwise would have lost.

What circumstances does student?s travel insurance or medical insurance cover?

? If your trip is cancelled, interrupted or delayed a travel insurance plan will reimburse you for the money you have spent on transportation, lodging, and other travel costs.

ACLU wins appeal against 'extreme' Ariz. abortion ban

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

A law in Arizona that the ACLU is calling?"the most extreme and dangerous of abortion bans" was blocked from taking effect on Thursday?after an emergency appeals request.

Arizona was set to become the ninth state?to forbid doctors from aborting a fetus 20 weeks into a pregnancy.?But unlike elsewhere in the country, Arizona would start the 20-week count after a pregnant woman's last menstrual period, or about 18 weeks into a pregnancy -- which is typically before medical problems can be detected in fetuses in prenatal exams, according to a lawsuit filed by the ACLU and the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights.

The law, which the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals blocked Wednesday, will likely be on hold through at least October, when all briefs on the case will be filed, said?Julie?Rikelman, litigation director for the Center for Reproductive Rights. A final decision is likely to be made in November or December, she said.

"We're thrilled with the decision," Rikelman said. "It's really great news for women in Arizona. We're very excited that women will still be able to get the health care that they need."

Under the ban, signed into law in April by Gov. Jan Brewer, R-Ariz., physicians could have their licenses revoked and face jail time if they violate its terms. Exceptions are life-threatening situations or medical emergencies for the mother, which Arizona law defines as a "serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function."

Those exceptions were not enough for?The Center for Reproductive Rights and the American Civil Liberties Union, who filed an emergency appeal Monday night after a preliminary injunction they filed in federal court in Phoenix was dismissed.

"This is by far the narrowest health exception in any abortion law in the country," Alexa?Kolbi-Molinas, staff attorney at the?ACLU's Reproductive Freedom Project, said. "It would force a physician who was caring for a woman with a high-risk pregnancy to wait until her condition has deteriorated to the point that it poses an immediate threat of death or major medical damage before offering her the care she needs."

It would also affect expectant mothers who receive disconcerting diagnoses about their fetuses: news that their child won't survive after birth, or will only survive for a short period of time in excruciating pain.

"For a lot of these women, that diagnosis can't be made until after 20 weeks,"?Kolbi-Molinas?said. "This certainly is the most extreme and dangerous of abortion bans that we've seen in some time."

Arizona's late-term ban is the latest in a string of anti-abortion measures being implemented across the country. Alabama, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Louisiana, and Nebraska have passed similar restrictions in recent years; North Carolina enacted its own ban, with different specifications to its law, decades ago, said Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager with the?Guttmacher?Institute, a rights organization based in New York.

A?'tidal?wave of abortion?restrictions'?across the U.S.
Nash said there's been "a tidal wave of abortion restrictions" passed recently: Prior to 2011, the most restrictions ever to be passed in a year on the state level was 34, in 2005. But in 2011, a record 92 abortion restrictions were passed, followed by 39 so far in 2012, she said.

Anti-abortion groups are pleased with their recent success in enacting restrictions, particularly the bans on late-term abortions.

"It's a fetal pain law, and it's one of many that have passed in the last few years. We're very pleased," Jeanne?Monahan, director of the Center for Human Dignity at the D.C.-based Family Research Council, said. "This is a law that has to do with the fact that a developing baby can feel pain at a certain time in development and so because of that, abortions are not legal after that period in its development."

Millions of women will no longer have to pay for birth control pills, Pap smears or mammograms and they will also have the right to breast feeding supplies and domestic violence screening. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports.

Monahan?lauded other recent anti-abortion wins on the state level -- parental consent and informed consent among them.?

"Anything that can make abortion more rare, I think most people will agree upon,"?she?said, citing a?Gallup poll from May, which found the percentage of Americans who call themselves "pro-choice" is at a record low of 41 percent.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, the increase in these laws is due to a shift in political makeup: state governments becoming more conservative over the past decade, particularly since the midterm elections.

Free birth control under health law starts?

"When the November 2010 elections came about, state legislatures and some governorships moved substantially to the more conservative end," Nash said. "You really had this welcoming environment to adopt abortion restrictions."

In Arizona, the change has been dramatic.

"If we look to 2000, Arizona was classified as a pro-choice state, supportive of abortion rights. For many years, the legislature was fairly hostile to abortion, but there was a governor in place who would veto abortion restrictions," Nash said. "When Gov. [Janet] Napolitano?left for the federal government in 2009, Jan Brewer took over."

The state has passed at least a dozen abortion restrictions in the three years since Brewer became governor, Nash said.

Kolbi-Molinas, the ACLU lawyer, said the Arizona ban could put women in a position where they feel pressure to get an abortion when they might not otherwise.

"One of the perverse effects of this law, if it does go into effect, is there are some women who have high-risk pregnancies ... and they may not be able to carry to term, but they really want to try as long as they can," she said. "They would feel pressured to get an abortion before 20 weeks because they wouldn't know if they'd be able to protect their health afterwards."

Up to 90 percent of abortions occur within the first trimester, she added, making the number of women who would even consider getting abortions after 20 weeks only a tiny sliver for Arizona to have to worry about.

"Another thing worth noting is the majority of women who have abortions are already mothers," she said. "If you think about the way this law is putting women at risk if there's something wrong with their health, it's essentially denying them the abortion they might need to return home to their family."

Despite the dozens of restrictions placed on abortion in recent years, anti-abortion advocates aren't gloating.

"In January, we're going to be marking the 40-year anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and approximately 54 million abortions have occurred since that decision in 1973," Monahan, of the Family Research Council,?said. "I don't think it's a moment of victory. It's a somber moment in our country on a lot of levels."
