A dangerous trend: Kids and teens using steroids | Your Healthy Child

A new study shows that about five percent of middle and high school students have used anabolic steroids to put on muscle, and that as many as one-third of boys and one-fifth of girls have used protein powder or shakes. Between five and 10 percent admitted to using non-steroid muscle-enhancing substances like creatine.

I was shocked to read these numbers. This is a brewing epidemic and parents need to become aware. We live in a complex world, and just like the war on drugs, we have make this a priority when it comes to our children.

Many kids see steroids as a tool to speed up the process of achieving their ideal body type and enhancing their athletic performance. And of course, this keeps them preoccupied with an image that they feel the need to achieve at any cost. And what?s even scarier, is that many people who abuse anabolic steroids often use more than one kind of drug at a time ? a practice that?s called stacking.

The problem is that the potential effects of steroid use could be quite deadly. Steroids can damage vital organs in the body including the heart, kidneys and liver, and they can also interfere with the natural development of hormones. They can also alter kids? behavior ? even to the point of emotional instability. Especially in teens, steroids can cause bone growth to stop before it is complete ? meaning a child may not reach his or her full adult height.

Unfortunately, many schools fail to teach about the dangers of steroids and athletic trainers in gyms around the country often fail to impress the scary facts upon their young clients. And of course, many professional athletes still are not helping enough because we continue to see them stripped of their medals and banned from their respective leagues for abusing steroids.

So what are we to do? Parents need to become aware. I would argue that a healthy interest in your child about exercising and athletics is good ? but you need to know what they are doing.

As a parent, you need to know the game plan. You need to know that your child understands that steroids are dangerous. And if they don?t understand it, you need to have that conversation.

Another thing you might want to consider is testing your child if you notice some of the tell-tale signs, like becoming aggressive, obsessing over body image or dramatic changes in their appetite. ?It?s as simple as testing for illegal drugs like cocaine, pot or methamphetamine. It can be done in the privacy of your own home and these tests are incredibly sensitive to dozens of different kinds of steroids. You typically have a 1-4 week window to test for traces of steroids in the urine. If a test does come back positive, at least you know what you are dealing with and you can prevent a bad outcome in the future.

We cannot bury our heads in the sand when it comes to this issue; we have to be aware to keep this problem under control. ?

Lebanese army dismantles rockets aimed at Israel

(AP) ? A senior Lebanese security official says military experts have dismantled two Katyusha rockets aimed at Israel. They were found in south Lebanon.

The official says the rockets found Monday near the village of Halta were placed about four kilometers (2.5 miles) away from the Lebanon-Israel border and were equipped with timers.

He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.

South Lebanon, the scene of bitter fighting between Israel and Lebanese militant Hezbollah guerrillas in 2006, is considered a Hezbollah stronghold.

There are also Palestinian radical groups and Islamic militants that could also provoke a border incident.

In 2008, during the last Israeli offensive on Gaza, several rockets were fired from southern Lebanon at northern Israel, provoking a brief Israeli artillery response.

New Study Shows Key Factors In Preventing And Reducing Child ...

From The Midland Daily News via PR Web?..

The Indiana University study, Predictors for Persistent Overweight, Deteriorated Weight, and Improved Weight Status During 18 Months in a School-Based Longitudinal Cohort, involved 5309 students in 11 Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois schools over an 18-month intervention. In addition to identifying overweight and weight gain factors, results showed participation in team sports and eating frequent meals are keys to helping students achieve a healthy weight. Researchers also noted that students in low socio-economic schools were more likely to be or become overweight ? possibly due to more nutritious food and physical activity opportunities at affluent schools.

While the results aren?t surprising, they emphasize the powerful influence that parents have on family well-being. ?This study sends a clear message to parents and school districts: limiting kids? access to soda and screen time, encouraging sports participation, and teaching them to eat regular meals all promote a healthy weight,? remarks Dean Witherspoon, President and founder of Health Enhancement Systems, which developed All In. ?And it underscores the strategies we?ve applied in employee wellness programs for over 15 years. It also gives parents another compelling reason to change their own behavior ? so they can become healthy-weight role models,? notes Witherspoon.

The All In Family Health & Wellness challenge encourages simple everyday behaviors ? like being physically active, reducing screen time, eating more produce, and sharing in family meals ? that even young children can practice. Families climb a virtual mountain, earning elevation by completing health-boosting daily and weekly activities. An inclusive, flexible definition of family gives the program wide appeal, and inspiring daily content supports action in 3 main areas: Move More, Eat for Energy, and Connect. The Family Table offers healthy recipes, conversation starters, and ideas for involving everyone in meal planning and cooking. And All In?s Ranger Redd mascot offers expert advice to help families reach the summit. The overall theme is having fun while moving toward better health? together.

Since 1980, obesity rates have nearly tripled among children and teens, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ?No parent wants their children to suffer the devastating physical, psychological, or social hardships of obesity,? explains Witherspoon. ?By equipping parents with the skills and resources to make wellness a family effort, social support for the hard work of behavior change is built in ? and everyone is more likely to adopt healthy behaviors for good. That?s what All In is about.? Organizations like Andersen Corporation, City of Kansas, Blue Ridge Healthcare, and Monterey County School Insurance Group have already implemented All In through their employee wellness programs ? with great feedback and results. ?Targeting employees for wellness initiatives without including dependents is a missed opportunity,? adds Witherspoon. ?Reaching out to families not only makes employee wellness programs more effective ? enhancing their potential impact on the bottom line ? it?s the right thing to do. All In strengthens family relationships while helping employees and dependents adopt healthy habits for the long haul.?

Eagles vs. Redskins: 7 Keys to the Game for Washington

When you talk about limiting speed or a?playmaker's ability, it's certainly easier said than done. And when it comes to the Redskins' defense, attempting to limit guys like LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson, and Jeremy Maclin, it makes for an even taller task.

Now that Michael Vick is likely done for the year, the Eagles are rolling with rookie Nick Foles?a sizeable pocket-passer with a very strong arm and limited experience. If the Eagles coaches were smart, they'd be coaching the rookie to get the ball out fast and into the hands of?Philadelphia's playmakers (those guys mentioned above).

Calling the Redskins' defense a struggling unit this season would be an understatement. Through nine games, they're allowing an average of 28 points per game and nearly 400 yards.

However, if the Redskins want to keep this game in reach, limiting the Eagles' speed is crucial. Allowing DeSean Jackson to get behind the defense or?giving LeSean McCoy daylight on a cutback lane could put the Redskins in a hole that's hard to escape.

Jim Haslett needs to scheme well, and the players need to execute.

High Security Animal Disease Lab Faces Uncertain Future

Dupple writes in with a story about the uncertain future of a proposed bio lab in the heart of cattle country. "Plans to build one of the world's most secure laboratories in the heart of rural America have run into difficulties. The National Bio and Agro defense facility (NBAF) would be the first US lab able to research diseases like foot and mouth in large animals. But reviews have raised worries about virus escapes in the middle of cattle country. For over fifty years the United States has carried out research on dangerous animal diseases at Plum Island, just off the coast of New York. However after 9/11 the Department of Homeland Security raised concerns about the suitability of the location and its vulnerability to terrorist attack."

Duke basketball looks to avoid being Florida Gulf Coast's second ACC upset

After earning a signature win against third-ranked Kentucky at a neutral site Tuesday, beating an unranked team at home would appear to be an easy feat for the Blue Devils. Florida Gulf Coast, however, is riding just as much momentum?the Eagles defeated Miami, ranked fourth in the ACC preseason coaches? poll, Tuesday.

No. 9 Duke (2-0) will look to avoid being Florida Gulf Coast?s (2-1) second ACC victim Sunday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

?Florida Gulf Coast is a good basketball team,? Blue Devil assistant coach Jeff Capel said. ?Their win against Miami is as big of a win as they?ve ever had in their program, so they?re going to be very, very confident. We played well against Kentucky, but we don?t want that to be the only time that we do that. We want to build off it, and hopefully that becomes who we are as a team and not just who we are at times.?

Eagle sophomore Bernard Thompson scored 13 points and notched four steals against Miami. After a successful rookie season, the guard was a unanimous Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen pick.

?We expect him to help carry us at times throughout the season offensively, but he?s also an excellent defender,? Florida Gulf Coast head coach Andy Enfield said. ?He really contributes to our success on both ends of the court.?

Another major contributor on the Eagles? roster is sophomore point guard Brett Comer. Also an Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen selection last season, he recorded eight assists and zero turnovers against the Hurricanes.

?We have to really get after him Sunday and not allow him to quarterback the team,? Capel said.

Enfield called his team ?young and inexperienced? in comparison to a Blue Devil roster that includes three seniors and two juniors who play regular minutes. Duke seniors Seth Curry, Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly combined for 51 of the team?s 75 points against Kentucky. Capel noted the importance of continuing to utilize that experience.

?Those are guys that we need to set the tone for everything we do with our basketball team and set an example for the younger guys in our program, teaching them the values and standards that our program represents,? he said.

The Blue Devils, who played fundamentally-sound basketball against Georgia State and Kentucky, continued to hone those fundamentals in practice this week. Against the Wildcats, Duke recorded 16 assists and made just eight turnovers.

?We?ve been focusing on our defense and executing on offensive sets,? junior guard Tyler Thornton said. ?We?re trying to build on what we?ve started so far this season.?

Duke will not be the only team trying to build on a strong start to the season Sunday night. Florida Gulf Coast is equally determined to win in its second game against an ACC opponent.

?We understand and respect the abilities of the Duke players,? Enfield said. ?They have a hall of fame coach, and Cameron is a difficult place to play. But we?re coming up with a game plan that takes their strengths away and gives us a chance to win the game.?

ONLINE PARENTING COACH: Aggressive Male Teens: Tips for ...

Your teenage son is becoming more and more aggressive toward you. He is quickly developing the habit of getting in your face and yelling when he doesn?t get his way. He has even threatened to hurt you if you don?t let him do what he wants. To make matters worse, he is taller and stronger than you, and you?re a single mother who gets no protection from your son?s father since he is rarely ? if ever ? around to intervene. What is a single mom to do?!

Aggressive male teens emotionally abuse their single mothers in an attempt to control them. Emotional abuse is considered domestic abuse, and it is just as harmful as physical abuse. Domestic abuse is defined as any instance when one family member begins to dominate the other member. Your aggressive son abuses you emotionally so he can get complete control over you ? your thoughts, beliefs and concept of yourself ? in order to be able to do what he wants, when he wants, and without any consequences.

Emotional abuse is often the prelude to physical abuse or domestic violence. If your teenage son threatens you with physical harm, don't take this as an idle threat. He won't play fair in his efforts to get his way. Listen to other family members, coworkers and friends when they express concern for you. Learn about the cycle of violence (i.e., a cycle your son follows as he continues to bring you ever more under his control).

Here are some tips for single moms who are dealing with a violent teenage son who can easily overpower his mother in the heat of the moment:

1. Break the silence on this issue. You need to let others know about the abuse. Talk to a female friend whom you trust and let her know what's been going on. If you have a healthy relationship with your ex-husband or his parents, tell them about your son?s abusive behavior.

2. Talk to a counselor. Make a plan for how you will communicate with this person. Ask him/her to only call you while your son is at school or out with friends ? or to wait for you to call, since your son may become more abusive if he finds out you're talking to someone. Depending on your situation, the counselor may recommend a formal "intervention" involving friends, family members, and perhaps even your pastor. During this meeting, this group of individuals will back you up as you confront your son about his abusive behavior. Tell him that you are not going to allow him to abuse you anymore, and insist that he get counseling for his anger problem immediately.

3. Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE for information and referrals in every state, crisis intervention or safety planning.

4. File a protective order. Go to the court clerk's office in your town to file a request for a restraining order, requiring your son to stay a certain distance away from you.

5. If friends, relatives or co-workers tell you they suspect you're being abused by your own child, don't be afraid to admit it.

6. Make an escape plan in the event your son becomes violent (e.g., pushes, smacks, hits, throws things at you, etc.). Leave as soon as you're able, and call the police. At the first sign of rage, leave the house and go a prearranged place where you will be safe. That could be a friend's home or your parents? home. It's also a good idea to have some extra clothing and toiletries in the trunk of your car.

7. Realize that you're involved in a very disrespectful relationship and your child is abusing you. Even though he hasn?t used his hands against you (YET!), his words and put-downs are just as damaging.

8. Recognize you have the right to be safe in your daily life. If your teenage son threatens physical violence against you, start filing police reports so you create a paper trail and obtain a restraining order so law enforcement can help you. With a trusted friend, develop a safety plan so you can get away with as little disruption of your life as possible.

9. Your self-esteem may become affected due to the emotional battering you've been subjected to. You loved, provided for, and raised this child ? and now he is treating you like a junkyard dog. Locate a therapist so you can begin individual therapy and start the healing process. Look for a therapist or clinical social worker who specializes in working with victims of domestic abuse or violence.

10. Your son is able to control his behaviors. When someone interrupted one of his abusive episodes (e.g., his father, a teacher, a police officer), he switched from being abusive to being calm and charming. Talk to your therapist about this ability and observe this switch so you can gain new insight about your son, especially if you can't bring yourself to kick him out of the house.?

DNZ lifts half year profit by 48pc | Stuff.co.nz

DNZ Property Fund's half-year profit rose by almost 50 per cent after rent renewals and lease reviews produced solid revenue growth.

The real estate investor delivered a net profit of $12.1 million for the six months ending September 31, up from $8.2m in the same period a year ago. Rental income was $26.9m, up 3.9 per cent. ?

DNZ shares rose 0.3 per cent to $1.58 in response to the earnings announcement, a 5c premium on its net tangible assets.

Distributable profit, the earnings measure preferred by property investors, came in at $12.7m or 5.15 cents per share, compared to $13m or 5.27 cents per share a year ago once tax was factored in.

The firm said it had secured 105 leases in the six months, lifting occupancy levels to 99 per cent from 98.7 per cent previously. The weighted average lease term was 5.7 years across the portfolio, up from 5.4 per cent.

"DNZ management has achieved excellent results, particularly in DNZ's Wellington office portfolio, with new long term leases to quality tenants," said chief executive Paul Duffy.

The firm also bought a fully occupied office building in Albany, north of Auckland, for $12.9m. Almost 80 per cent is rented to Westpac under a new nine-year lease.

The firm said four of its five sites have been declared earthquake prone following a full seismic review, representing $25m or 3.75 per cent of its portfolio value.

A second quarter dividend of 2.25 cents per share was declared, and carries imputation credits of 0.694 cents. It is payable to shareholders on December 13.

Species: Illacme plenipes
Habitat: a tiny area of oak forest near Silicon Valley in California

There's a problem with the names of things: they're often wrong. Peanuts are not nuts, catgut is generally made from sheep, shooting stars are actually rocks, and any country that calls itself a Democratic Republic is almost certainly a totalitarian dictatorship.

The same is true of those notorious little scuttlers, the millipedes and centipedes. Some centipedes have well over 100 legs ? Gonibregmatus plurimipes has 382 ? so we should really call them multicentipedes. And no known millipede has 1000 legs: it's rare for them to have more than a few hundred.

One species, however, comes close. Illacme plenipes can have up to 750 legs, more than any other animal. We know little about it, but as we find out more, it seems its overabundance of lower limbs is the least of its peculiarities.

She got legs

I. plenipes was thought to be extinct, as it had not been seen since 1928. But then it was rediscovered in 2005, by graduate student Paul Marek, now at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Marek found it lurking underground in a single ravine in San Benito County, California (Nature, doi.org/cxh24p).

Its name means "the acme of plentiful legs", which is about right. Males have a mere 300 to 400 legs, but females have up to 750 despite being just 3.2 centimetres long. Their leg count edges out their closest competitor, a Puerto Rican millipede called Siphonophora millepeda, which has 742.

Animals don't evolve a multitude of legs just to amuse us: there's presumably some advantage. Marek says I. plenipes's legs may help it to burrow underground, where it spends all its time.

Or they could be a sort of accident, a consequence of I. plenipes evolving another anatomical advantage: its digestive tract is spiral-shaped and thus has a high surface area, allowing it to absorb more water and nutrients from its food before excreting it. Marek says I. plenipes may have evolved a very long gut to cope with a sparse diet ? with the legs as an incidental result.

Silky smooth

Marek and colleagues have now taken a closer look at I. plenipes to find out how it lives. It seems to have a rather dangerous existence and has evolved accordingly. While most burrowing animals are streamlined, so they can move smoothly through soil, I. plenipes is anything but. "It has a significant diversity of spines, projections, setae [bristles] and other sharp pointy objects that seem they would get snagged," says Marek.

That suggests it has many predators to defend against. Each segment of its body has defensive pores facing out to the side, which secrete a defensive chemical. Marek says I. plenipes may use the spines to deter predators, and then squirt them with chemicals if they don't back down.

It also has hairs on its back, which produce a sticky substance similar to silk. This could be another defence, used to gum up predators. Or the silk could help keep the millipede clean by seeing off junk that would otherwise stick to its spines.

There's a third possibility. I. plenipes spends a lot of its time on buried sandstone boulders, and the sticky silk may help it cling on. If that's true, the silk is effectively acting as another set of legs.

Right now we don't know what the silk is for, and we may not have long to find out. I. plenipes is confined to an area of just 4.5 square kilometres. "The species is exceedingly rare," says Marek. "Species in the US that are more secure than I. plenipes are [categorised as] federally threatened and endangered. Folks should consider formal protection for this species."

commercial real estate, relationship, bullshit | Duke Long

Well as things would have it if you post up an opinion and or point of view you will get the conversation started. Case in point my last post titled ?It?s All About Relationships In Commercial Real Estate.? That?s Bullshit!

A few thousand views later and it seems some people want clarification or at least a little more fuel for the fire.

Hey fine with me! Let?s Let It Rip!

A singular point that I made was that relationships or relationship building really was and is a waste of time. It?s about the location and the data that help define that specific location.

Let me help define that point with a simple?scenario.

Site selection on 5 properties for a fast casual restaurant site.

Site 1. Great demographics excellent?accessibility great price low visibility.

Site 2. High traffic excellent labor pool construction issues fair price.

Site 3. Tax incentives high?visibility close to distribution center?highest?price.

Site 4. Local labor incentives good?accessibility tough labor pool?best price.

Site 5. Size is too big perfect corner state and local tax incentives fair price great?demographics.

You say ?hey wait, there is not enough info here to?really?make a decision.? Ok, I agree with you on that point.

Layer on a few more data points and what do you have? 5 sites that you need to?analyze digest?and then pick the best one for your restaurant. Make the offer tie it down and start the process of building your store.

That?s it. That?s all there is to it. Which one would you pick? You know what?s coming next!

Where in the hell does the relationship with the broker or company representing the site you picked MATTER?

Let?s say for the sake of argument that site 3 was the one that made the cut. Why? Do you need the?complete?history of the company the?CEO?and brokers of the company of site 3. Is that the thing that swayed your decision away from let?s say site 5?

So let?s put it another way! Both companies representing sites 3 and 5 are the most reputable?ethical?moral professional companies and the nicest people you have ever met. You are almost heart broken to take the call and tell the rep from site 5 that they are not going to get the deal. Of course the rep asks if there is anything they could do to?persuade you?other wise and your simple answer is NO!

Now it is no stretch of the imagination that the rep get?s off the phone and steps into his bosses office and tells them that they did not make the cut. Of course the big boss wants to know why and of course the answer is?????

Yes, the OTHER SITE was a better business decision for the buyer. Not a damn thing the company rep for site 5 could have done to make one little bit of difference.

The relationship DID NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE TO THE DECISION MAKER!

So now you are saying that it?s time for you to ?Call Bullshit.? Fair enough. A few professional souls already have. Go to the?discussion?and comments in the Corporate Real Estate Group on LinkedIn.

Here are a few thoughts on the comments that stood out to me.

?Relationships build?clientele?and clientele builds business.?

Hard to argue with this one but if your site sucks your site sucks.

?Brokers create a value add to clients by creating a commercial real estate strategy and?implementing?it.?

Ok, I get the value add but other that shuffling some paper help define value add for me?.and be careful.

?At the very least creating a ?temporary? relationship while doing the deal helps solidify the deal.?

So it?s not really a relationship at all it?s fake it til you make it?

?Creating a good feeling or supposed trust will help make the deal.?

Based on what I am not sure? The broker has nice glasses? So?therefore?that makes me trust him?

?All things being equal a relationship will build trust and help the deal.?

When are all things ever equal?

?Maybe we should just buy him some diapers?

God I loved this one :) Don?t stand on the soapbox if you are not prepared to take some hits!

Does Sam Zell Really Care If He Ever Meets Duke Long?

Serious question. The answer is probably not. Does that mean Sam ( The Grave Dancer) is not a friendly professional and interesting guy. Hell no!

Now let?s throw this into the mix. I get?a hold?of one of Sam?s people and I suggest that there is a building almost within view of his office window that is going under and that he may be able to get one hell of a deal for it. Maybe a hotel or condo conversion is possible and I know that the sellers are bailing and the bank is going to get hurt bad.

That?scenario?is not that far fetched by the way?I think he went for a deal very similar to this last year in Chicago. I can only imagine the amount of bullshit he is pitched on a daily basis.

Sam does not know me from the man on the moon and why should he? Should I take the time to cultivate a relationship with him? Should he even consider?taking?the time to cultivate one with me? ?Why would Sam and I ever need to ?klasai arton? unless it was to do a deal?

By the way Sam if you have pulled yourself away from your multi billion dollar?business to read this and want to lunch my email is dukelong@dukelong.com.

Hey, you never know maybe if I build and cultivate and?nurture?a relationship with Sam??????

Thoughts comments opinions are always encouraged and appreciated.

Five Hour Energy drinks linked to deaths?

Five Hour Energy drinks are meant to give that boost of energy, but new reports suggest it could kill you.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports of 13 deaths over the last four years in connection to the drink.

Since 2009, 5-Hour Energy has been mentioned in 90 filings with the FDA including serious conditions like heart attacks, convulsions and in one case spontaneous abortion.

The report is the second time in recent weeks citing energy drinks and deaths have emerged.

So far Living Essentials, which distributes 5-Hour Energy, has not responded to written questions about the filing.

DCmud - The Urban Real Estate Digest of Washington DC: Bigger ...

Skyland?- the very name implies the ever distant horizon - is back for another zoning review to fully entitle the project, this time to fit Walmart into the equation.

The most recent change regarding the large ?town center? complex is a PUD amendment that was submitted late last week by the development team behind the project. The original PUD was approved by the Office of Zoning in September 2010, but that was before Walmart signed on as the development?s anchor store last fall. The inclusion of the mega-retailer necessitated a number of changes to the plan?though nothing particularly substantive, according to the application. ?The proposed PUD modification application is NOT proposing significant changes to the approved PUD project,? reads the document.

That means the development will continue to include 450-500 residential units, some of which will be townhomes and/or affordable housing, and retail space will increase only slightly, from 311,000 s.f. to 342,000 total s.f.

The most serious change appears to be a decrease in the number of parking spaces needed. The total number will be down by about 300 ?which meets one of the Office of Planning?s goals,? Matt Ritz, a vice president at William C. Smith &. Company, pointed out. ?Smith is one of the members of the development team, along with The Rappaport Companies, Harrison Malone Development, the Marshall Heights Community Development Organization, and the Washington East Foundation.

Other changes include lowering the height of parts of the building Walmart will occupy, slightly reducing the number of townhouses, and topping a section of the project with solar panels and a green roof, rather than with a final layer of parking as originally planned.

The revamped development should include slightly more green space, and the application hints at more ?green? elements to come: ?Walmart has several sustainable goals for this project which will be achieved by the following features: use of water efficient faucets and toilets; implementation of an energy management system; high-efficiency HVAC design; LED lighting; sun shading devices on the roof; and a construction waste stream management program."

Ritz is hoping the project will get a hearing with the Zoning Commission before the end of the year and a public hearing sometime around March 2013. But it?s all up in the air. ?The dates are with a grain of salt,? he said. ?It?s all contingent on the Zoning Commission.? And the company is still a very long way from soliciting construction bids.

Still, as slowly as it?s going, there is definitely movement occurring at Skyland. In September, the city celebrated the start of a demolition process of some of the buildings in the existing shopping center. And of seven legal cases that were pending in early 2011 - all linked to the city's use of eminent domain on the project--only one is still unresolved.

Land grant heirs want Arroyo Hondo back

ARROYO HONDO, N.M. (KRQE) - A land battle with roots going back more than a century is forcing thousands of New Mexico property owners into a kind of limbo where they are unable to sell or refinance their land and homes.

?We?ve ruffled a lot of feathers, but justice is justice,? said Lawrence Ortiz, an heir of the Arroyo Hondo Land Grant just outside Taos.

Ortiz and other members of the Arroyo Hondo Land Grant Board filed a warranty deed with the Taos County Assessor?s office in 2010, reclaiming more than 20,000 acres originally granted by the Spanish government to Arroyo Hondo?s founding families when Spain still controlled the area.

The U.S. government officially recognized the grant in 1908, assigning the land to the founding families? descendants.

Over the years some of those descendants sold off pieces of the land grant. Much of Arroyo Hondo was bought by private property owners who now call the area home.

?We had people from outside that came in and they intimidated, and like I say, they thought they could get away with it,? Ortiz told KRQE News 13. ?Now that we?re educated and we know more, we?re in this situation now.?

Ortiz believes land grant descendants were taken advantage of and he is waging a war on their behalf.

Whatever, the case, the deed filed in 2010 has turned the real estate market in Arroyo Hondo upside down, casting a cloud over who owns what and has made selling and refinancing properties next to impossible.

?We?re in a financial mess because of this,? said Teresa Field, an Arroyo Hondo resident whose attempts at selling her home have failed. ?Our title is clouded. The title company tells us that the house can?t be sold.?

With thousands of properties affected, three title companies recently filed suit in federal court, asking a judge to void the land grant board?s claim. According to the title companies, millions of dollars worth of real estate transactions have been ?delayed, or in some cases, abandoned.?

?It?s caused a lot of anxiety,? said Santiago Juarez, an attorney who represented the land grant board in the federal lawsuit. ?I?m not gonna say it hasn?t.?

U.S. District Court Judge M. Christina Armijo dismissed the case in August, saying the title companies had no standing to sue. The judge ruled that, unlike property owners, the title companies were not directly affected and had no basis for filing the suit.

KRQE News 13 has confirmed at least three additional lawsuits are pending in state court connected to the land grant dispute.

Ortiz said he is confident the land grant heirs will prevail.

?Yes, definitely,? Ortiz said. ?Because we have the documents.?

According to Ortiz, land grant heirs have waited too long to take action.

?What we want is justice,? Ortiz said. ?We want justice and we want our lands back so that our future kids and grandkids can have a place to come back and be able so say ?I have a place to come back to.??

A state District Court judge recently sided with one property owner in the land battle, who happens to be Ortiz?s sister. But separate court cases involving other property owners are still undecided.

In the meantime, Lawrence Ortiz is facing criminal charges for allegedly forging documents connected to the land dispute, something he denies.

Trial is scheduled for November 26.

Tesla Model S electrifies Motor Trend judges, unanimously voted 2013 Car of the Year

Tesla's Model S roadster has nabbed Motor Trend's 2013 Car of the Year award, making it the first electric car to garner the prize. The EV was voted in unanimously by the publication's judges while beating out the formidable likes of BMW, Porsche and Lexus. In announcing the award, the editors proclaimed the vehicle to be sporty, efficient, spacious and "as smoothly effortless as a Rolls-Royce." Meanwhile, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk opined that gaining the prize over the gas-burners was a "critical step towards the widespread adoption of sustainable transport." Now all the automaker needs to do is ramp up production and it might start to generate cash as well as awards.

An Introduction To Bass Fishing : Sports and Recreation

You are here: Home / Fishing / An Introduction To Bass Fishing

It is pretty amazing how much of a significant difference bass fishing can have, of course you have to think about certain factors.

It is just not true that bass fishing is like hunting any other type of fish. Of course there?s lots of ways to discover how to best fish for them, and people can be your greatest asset. That big bass you heard about will give you a lesson in what not to do, and the only thing about that is you may not know what mistakes you made. As you can see, experience is the best teacher along with great articles like this.

There are lot of shiny bells and whistles with fishing gear, and you really don?t need most of it. If you have money to burn, then that?s another story, but if on a budget then you have to be smart. If you?re not conditioned to fish all day, you will get very tired with casting for hours on end. And the rod and reel weight will definitely make a difference, so pay attention to the weight of what you?re buying, and it?s fine to go with a lighter rod and reel combination. Many of the bass have different names, and in this case we?re talking about the black bass which is also the spotted bass. This is one of the bass that very many people love to fish for just because it?s a bass and a good sporting fish. If the small mouth are just too small in size, then the spotted bass will be better as they are larger. All of them will be something to contend with once you hook onto them, and that is really part of the lure of bass fishing.

We trust that what you have been reading in this post in regards to bass fishing, as well as also the details?? about fishing tips, is? useful for your requirements. Please do keep reading?? more below to find supplemental details about these topics.

Another favorite for bass anglers is the small mouth bass and they like waters that are more clear and deeper. When it comes to fast moving water, they don?t particular go for it and then they?ll stay in places where the water is not so fast.

Of course you won?t want to use the same size hooks for small mouth that you use for large mouth. So the bait issue really should not be there since they are known to go for most types of baits.

Information or knowledge is power, and this applies just as well to bass fishing as it does to anything else. The tips in this article are really barely a scratch on the surface, but they?re solid and will help you. Spend some time in the fish shops, and you?ll see other hanging around them too. But just be sure you can separate fact from fiction as fishermen are notorious for telling whoppers.

Speaking our Truth | Northern Lights

A few weeks ago I had written my blog post about my testimony of the Atonement and my experience in surrendering fantasies. ?When I had finished writing that post I felt an immense spirit and peace come over me that I had been seeking for a few days. ?I realized then that I cannot fully share my love and testimony of the Savior and his Atonement without also sharing my story. ?A still small impression came to me to share my testimony and story that upcoming fast and testimony meeting.

A week ago on Sunday, in fast and testimony meeting, I went to the pulpit and spoke, ?I?d like to share my testimony of the Atonement in my life. ?I do not know how I could fully share my testimony without also sharing the story of my struggles and trials in my life. ?When I was four years old, I was molested by my uncle. ?Growing up, we moved around quite a bit where it seemed like I was always saying good bye to my friends. ?My father worked so often, it was difficult for me to create a close relationship with him. ?When I entered high school all of my friends were interested in girls. ?I wondered why I didn?t and figured I would be a late bloomer. ?Over time, I came to understand that I experience what is called Same Sex Attraction??

Public speaking has never been a fear for me. ?It has always been a strength. ?I could speak to hundreds or thousands of people without a sweat. ?Yet, in my small singles ward I felt fear speaking in front of them.

I shared my struggles. ?I shared with them my love for the Savior. ?I expressed gratitude for being blessed with my trials. ?How could I give up something that has given me the close relationship I have with the Savior. ?I said that many guys like me just want a best friend. ?Although I have many precious men in my life who I call close friends, and one I will refer to as my best friend, the true best friend to me has and always will be my savior, Jesus Christ.

Many of the members thanked me for my testimony, expressed love for me, and commended me for my bravery. ?I felt fear for being labelled ?that guy? or being put on a?pedestal?by the ward members. ?What I have found has been acceptance and love from them.

Since then, I have heard of other brave pioneers who have also shared their journey with SSA in their wards and communities. ?My Bishop actually spoke with me and asked that I share my knowledge with him and teach him. ?He also shared his own struggles and it warmed my heart to know how vulnerable he was with me. ?It gives me so much joy to know that I am not alone in this and that the church has heard and will continue to hear our voices. ?This sensitive issue is difficult to understand and is very taboo to even talk about.

I think of when I was in denial because I felt there was no place to go for a young man with SSA who wanted to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ. ?I must have either lived the gay lifestyle and broken the covenants I made of chastity or live a quiet life of denial and secrecy. ?When I think of me at this time in my life I wonder how many faithful Latter-Day Saints are in the same boat I was in.

How can we reach out to these faithful LDS members? ?How can we help our ward leaders understand our struggles? ?How can we share the blessings of our journeys with SSA?

We must share our stories. ?We must speak our truth. ?Yes, this is scary. ?There is a lot at risk in doing this. ?We may fear being?ostracized or our family being ostracized. ?We may fear the opposite and fear being put on a pedestal and the pressure that comes from being judged as holy people having so much put upon us. ?I have feared being known as that guy with SSA when there is so much more to know about me.

Two scriptures come to mind when I think of sharing our stories. ?The first is D&C 60:2 which reads, ?But with some I am not well?pleased, for they will not open their mouths, but they hide the talent which I have given unto them, because of the fear of man.? ?I think it is important that we share our stories with not just other members of the church but even sons and daughters of God outside of the kingdom as well. ?We should not let the fear of man stop us from standing in the power of our Heavenly Father to share our faith.

The other scripture I have thought of is Matthew 7:6 which reads ?Give?not?that?which?is?holy?unto?the?dogs,?neither?cast?ye your?pearls?before?swine,?lest?they?trample?them?under?their?feet, and?turn?again?and?rend?you.? With such sacred gifts and stories we can share it is important to?acknowledge?their sacredness and to protect them. ?There are times, places, and persons where sharing our experiences would be inappropriate. ?To take such a step in openness like this can really hurt us as well.

Don?t be afraid to speak your truth. ?To do so is not always for the benefit of our brothers and sisters but for an opportunity for us to bear testimony unto ourselves and to remind ourselves of the love the Savior has for us. ?It is often to remind ourselves of our divine heritage of sons and daughters of God.

King George VI

There is a movie I really love called the King?s Speech. ?King George VI?s struggle with his speech impediment is similar to the experiences I?ve had with SSA. ?There is a scene in this movie when speech therapist Lionel Logue is speaking with Bertie, the-about-to-be-King-George-VI, while he get?s ready for his coronation as King. ?Lionel sits in St. Edward?s chair practically mocking the idea of there even being a King. ?Bertie is offended at the?sacrilege?and commands him to get out of the chair. ?Lionel doesn?t get up and continues to challenge Bertie as he continues to stutter.

King George VI: Listen to me. *Listen to me!*
Lionel Logue: Listen to you? By what right?
King George VI: By divine right if you must, I am your king.
Lionel Logue: No you?re not, you told me so yourself. You didn?t want it. Why should I waste my time listening?
King?George VI: Because I have a right to be heard. I HAVE A VOICE!
Lionel Logue: [pauses] Yes, you do.
[Longer pause]
Lionel Logue: You have such perseverance Bertie, you?re the bravest man I know.

In that moment of challenge to something so close to Bertie?s heart, he speaks loud and clearly, ?I HAVE A VOICE!? ?He doesn?t stammer. ?He speaks his truth. ?Lionel is awed by the beauty of growth he sees in his patient and friend. ?Bertie finds his confidence to lead his nation as King from stepping up to the challenge before him.

Brothers and sisters, I know that when we are challenged, when our voices need to be heard, God will give us the strength even if we feel we don?t have it. ?Why should we be afraid of man when we have our loving Father in Heaven supporting us as we faithfully use our voices? ?I?m so thankful for this gospel and for a voice that my Heavenly Father gives me.
