New Jersey residents fight nightmarish commute with no quick fix

HOBOKEN/MAPLEWOOD, New Jersey (Reuters) - New Jersey commuters who headed back to New York City to work on Monday found a chaotic landscape of long lines, jammed buses and rail cars and lengthy waits to get through tunnels due to the impact of superstorm Sandy.

And while transit officials forecast relief in the days ahead, it will take weeks at least to fully repair the damage from the storm, which killed at least 113 people in the United States and Canada and downed power lines in the region. More than 1.4 million homes and businesses are still without power.

Many saw typical commutes of 40 minutes or less stretch into two- and three-hour ordeals, as commuters from inoperable train lines scrambled to board buses, ferries and different trains that could get them into the city.

"It's just demand exceeds supply. That's all there is to it," said Joshua Crandall, who operates Clever Commute, a service that commuters use to alert one another of service disruptions. "Anyone who thought they could get up and wing it had a painful reality check. A lot of people just gave up and went home."

New Jersey Transit transported 15 percent more passengers by bus and rail into New York City during rush hour on Monday morning than they do on a typical weekday, said spokesman John Durso Jr.

Part of the reason is that the PATH rail system, which sees more than 260,000 passenger boardings on an average day, remained shut down because of storm damage. Partial PATH service resumes Tuesday, which should alleviate some of the load.

About 25,000 people got to the city by train, Durso said, which is about half the normal rush-hour load. Another 126,000 made it to Manhattan or New Jersey ferry terminals by bus - 36,000 more than on a typical day.

Only one of the two Hudson River rail tunnels has reopened, limiting the number of trains NJ Transit can run into Penn Station. The Hoboken Terminal also remains closed because of flood damage.

"This is going to be a long recovery," Durso said. "Service is not going to return to normal overnight. Service is not going to return to normal for weeks."

NOT ENOUGH BUSES

Commuters who normally ride trains on NJ Transit lines that are shut down because of Sandy found there simply weren't enough buses to get to work. Scott Greenstone, who normally rides the Morris and Essex line from South Orange to New York Pennsylvania Station, got to the South Orange station at 6:25 a.m., but this time to board a bus.

"The line was already 200 people long," Greenstone said. "By the time I got on the bus at 7:43, the line was probably 500 people."

To alleviate the bus shortage, the Federal Transit Administration said it was working with other federal agencies - FEMA and the U.S. General Services Administration - to secure about 350 more buses. It was not clear when the buses would arrive to be put into service.

Getting on a bus or train wasn't a happy experience, either.

"The trains were so packed everyone was standing, people opened the doors up and were even standing in the bathrooms, " said Michael Marvin, who spent nearly three hours navigating from his home in Maplewood, N.J., to his office in lower Manhattan.

North Jersey Coast Line service, which started at Woodbridge and travels through the large Metro Park Station, was suspended shortly after 7 a.m. because there were not enough trains to meet demand. Woodbridge Station will remain closed on Tuesday.

Service also was suspended at Newark Penn Station because of crowding. NJ Transit dispatched buses to pick up stranded customers, Durso said.

NJ Transit monitored the demand and intends to expand park-and-ride and bus service in areas where it is greatest, Durso said. Ferry service has been expanded too.

Some PATH service will resume on Tuesday, easing some of the pressure on NJ Transit.

Service will run from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. from Journal Square in Jersey City to 33rd Street in Manhattan but will not make all stops. Hoboken Terminal remains closed.

Meanwhile, Connecticut and Long Island commuters are having an easier time getting to work. Metro North has resumed full service on all of its East of Hudson lines. Long Island Rail Road is running 10 of its 11 lines.

NJ Transit is struggling on three fronts. Several heavily traveled lines have severe damage, including track wash-outs that will require lengthy repairs. Flooding left one of its heavily used endpoints - Hoboken Terminal - out of commission. And 35 percent of its locomotives and 23 percent of its rail cars were damaged during the storm.

Sixty-five locomotive engines and more than 250 passenger cars were damaged by salt water that flooded train yards, Durso said. Water did not engulf the cars, but damaged gear boxes, wheels and traction motors.

Durso said the equipment had been moved before the storm to what was thought to be safe ground. But it did not prove to be safe enough.

"This was record-breaking flooding," he said. "Greater flooding than that area had ever experienced or ever could have anticipated."

All of the engines and cars can be repaired, he said, but parts will have to be ordered. He had no time estimate for getting the equipment back in service.

Search For Michelle Parker Resumes Near Ex-Fiance's Home

Florida police resumed its search Sunday for Michelle Parker, an Orlando mother of three who vanished nearly a year ago just after an episode of the "The People's Court" featuring her and her ex-fianc? aired.

Police officers with search dogs and more than 100 civilians joined Sunday's search of wooded areas off Goldenrod Road in the Lee Vista area. According to Orlando's WKMG, the FBI urged detectives to conduct Sunday's search near the Carter Glen condominiums where Parker's 41-year-old ex-fianc? Dale Smith lives. The area was previously searched.

According to Parker?s father, Brad Parker, searchers found some bones there, but he did not know if they were from a human or an animal. They are currently being examined by forensic experts. "It was a long day, but it was good," Parker told the Orlando Sentinel.

Michelle Parker was last seen Nov. 17, 2011, the same day she appeared on "The People's Court" with Smith. The two were on the show to settle a dispute over a $5,000 engagement ring that was lost after she threw it at him during an argument. During the program, which was taped months earlier, Parker alleged that Smith had a drug and alcohol problem, and had been violent with her in the past.

"He gets pretty malicious and vindictive," Parker said on the show. "And he's a mean person, especially when he's been drinking. He shouldn't have put his hands on me, and he shouldn't have put his hands on me prior. He shouldn't have left me three or four times over the past year and a half that we've been together."

After hearing both sides, Judge Marilyn Milian ruled the couple should split the cost of the ring and ordered Parker, the mother of an 11-year-old son and two 4-year-old twins, to pay $2,500 for her half.

A few hours after the episode aired, Parker dropped her twins off at Smith's condo for a scheduled visit. At 7:30 p.m., Parker failed to show up for her job at The Barn restaurant in Sanford.

According to family members, the last text message sent from Parker's phone was to her brother at 4:26 p.m. the day she disappeared. It contained the single word, "Waterford," a possible reference to a nearby area. Police say the cell phone stopped transmitting a signal near a tower south of downtown Orlando.

On Nov. 18, Parker's 2008 black Hummer H3 was found in a parking lot on the west side of Orlando. Decals for her Glow mobile tanning business had been removed from the windows, police said.

The missing mom's cell phone was later found by a police dive team under a bridge at Lake Conway in Belle Isle. The location is not far from the cell phone tower that registered the last ping from Parker's iPhone.

"The phone was found in remarkably good condition and is currently undergoing forensic testing in the hopes that it will yield physical evidence and/or data which will assist in this investigation," said an Orlando Police Department news release.

Police initially said Smith was cooperating and was not a suspect, but during a press conference two weeks after Parker's disappearance, Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney announced that Smith was the primary suspect in Parker's disappearance. Rooney did not elaborate.

Smith's past, however, may play a role in why police suspect him. According to NBC's "Today" show, he was convicted of battery in the 1990s, serving 10 days in jail. His second wife, Shannon, died of an accidental drug overdose.

His five-year stint in the U.S. Marine Corps ended in 2001 when he was found guilty of drug and domestic battery charges. Smith was subsequently dishonorably discharged in 2003. More recently, in 2009, Parker attempted to obtain a restraining order against Smith, but the request was denied due to lack of evidence.

Parker's twins have been living with Smith since her disappearance. Her 11-year-old son is from a previous relationship and is living with his father out-of-state.

Contacted Monday by The Huffington Post, Tampa bureau of the FBI and the Orlando police did not immediately return calls for comment.

A statement posted to the "Michelle Parker Missing Person" Facebook page by her family says: "Today I am thankful for the over 140 people who showed up to search for Michelle ... I never thought I would ever have to spend a day in my life cutting through woods searching for a loved one with a machete. We are cut, scratched, bleeding, sweaty, exhausted, dirty and sun burned and I can't wait to do it again. While we didn't get our answer just yet, we covered miles of ground. Every step in knowing where she isn't, is a step closer in closing the gap to where she IS."

Parker's family is reportedly considering another search on Nov. 17, the one-year anniversary of her disappearance.

"We are looking for Michelle ... We will not stop," the Facebook post said. "We will not let the evil that has taken her from us, her son's and daughter win. We will search however long and how ever far we have to."

Parker was last seen wearing jeans, a Florida Gators sweatshirt and a silver cross necklace. Anyone with information about her disappearance is asked to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-8477.

Scientists monitor comet breakup

ScienceDaily (Nov. 4, 2012) ? The Hergenrother comet is currently traversing the inner-solar system. Amateur and professional astronomers alike have been following the icy-dirt ball over the past several weeks as it has been generating a series of impressive outbursts of cometary-dust material. Now comes word that the comet's nucleus has taken the next step in its fragmentation.

"Comet Hergenrother is splitting apart," said Rachel Stevenson, a post-doctoral fellow working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Using the National Optical Astronomy Observatory's Gemini North Telescope on top of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, we have resolved that the nucleus of the comet has separated into at least four distinct pieces resulting in a large increase in dust material in its coma."

With more material to reflect the sun's rays, the comet's coma has brightened considerably.

"The comet fragments are considerably fainter than the nucleus," said James Bauer, the deputy principal investigator for NASA's NEOWISE mission, from the California Institute of Technology. "This is suggestive of chunks of material being ejected from the surface."

The comet's fragmentation event was initially detected on Oct. 26 by a team of astronomers from the Remanzacco Observatory, using the Faulkes Telescope North in Haleakala, Hawaii. The initial fragment was also imaged by the WIYN telescope group at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona.

For those interested in viewing Hergenrother, with a larger-sized telescope and a dark sky, the comet can be seen in between the constellations of Andromeda and Lacerta.

The orbit of comet 168P/Hergenrother comet is well understood. Neither the comet, nor any of its fragments, are a threat to Earth.
